PELNI Inaugurates Biogas Digesters, Turning Cattle Waste into Renewable Energy

Kupang, December 18, 2024 – PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (PT PELNI) officially inaugurated the construction of biogas digesters at several local cattle farms in Kupang on Wednesday (18/12). These facilities transform cattle waste into biogas, providing an alternative energy source for household use.

The construction of these biogas digesters is part of PT PELNI's Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) Program. The inauguration was led by PELNI’s Director of Finance and Risk Management, Anik Hidayati, alongside Vice Treasury PELNI, Fauziah Ferryna, Head of PELNI Kupang Branch, Harianto Sembiring, and prominent local figures in Kupang.

In her remarks, Anik expressed hope that the digesters would benefit Kupang’s residents, particularly cattle farmers who had not yet utilized their livestock waste effectively. "Kupang is a major cattle producer, with shipments regularly transported to Jakarta via PELNI’s livestock ships," said Anik.

Anik added that in 2024, PELNI transported a total of 4,699 cattle, 3,779 of which came from Kupang, with the remainder sourced from Waingapu. "The significant volume of livestock from Kupang inevitably generates considerable waste. Through the TJSL Biogas Program, we aim to convert cattle waste into a valuable alternative energy source," she explained.

To develop the Biogas Program in Kupang, PELNI collaborated with the Rural Development Studies Center at Universitas Brawijaya. In addition to installations at two residential farms, biogas digesters were constructed at commercial farming facilities owned by CV Sinar Pelangi and UD Terobos.

Vice Treasury PELNI, Fauziah Ferryna, detailed the biogas system's structure, which includes a mixer and airtight tank connected via a gas pipeline network to local households.

"Cattle waste is collected in the mixer, where it is combined with water in specific ratios. This mixture undergoes anaerobic fermentation in the airtight tank, producing gas that can be used for gas lamps or stoves," Ferryna explained.

PELNI’s TJSL Program aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations, which have been integrated into the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises’ TJSL initiatives. In addition to its social dimension, PELNI’s TJSL framework incorporates economic, environmental, and governance pillars.
