KM Kelud, owned by PT PELNI (Persero), has been assigned by Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation to serve as a floating accommodation during the 2024 PON XXI in Aceh. The vessel arrived and docked at Malahayati Port, Krueng Raya, Aceh Besar, on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
With a total capacity of 2,600 beds, this ship was provided by the Directorate General of Sea Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation as an additional lodging solution for the PON XXI participants and visitors in Aceh. It is part of the government’s effort to support the success of the national sporting event.
Acting Governor of Aceh, Safrizal ZA, who also serves as the Chairman of the PON XXI Organizing Committee for the Aceh Region, personally welcomed the arrival of KM Kelud. In his speech, he expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Transportation, the Director General of Sea Transportation, and the Board of Directors of PT PELNI for their support in providing this floating lodging.
He also encouraged the public and sports supporters to take advantage of the accommodation offered aboard KM Kelud. “Please make use of the facilities that have been prepared, free of charge!” he stated.
Likewise, Capt. Hasan Sadili, Head of Domestic Sea Transportation Sub-Directorate, mentioned that this floating accommodation initiative is a form of real support from the Ministry of Transportation for the success of PON XXI. The lodging service is available to the public free of charge. “The presence of KM Kelud is expected to assist especially the organizing committee, so the available accommodation facilities can benefit the public and provide a new experience,” he said.
Hasan also expressed his hope that the rooms will be fully utilized, targeting an occupancy rate of more than 50 percent throughout the PON event. PT PELNI also hopes this initiative will further enhance the image of KM Kelud as a vessel that is a source of pride for the people of Sumatra, particularly North Sumatra, which is part of its regular route.
